The NKM Collaboration That Started It All | Kalaluha

Every production company has a night it points back to. For Kalaluha, that night arrived in February 2022, before the company itself was even founded, when the first Kannada DJ party was staged with NKM, Namma Karnataka Memes, billed in Explocity's coverage as being in association with Chethana production. A meme page and a producer betting that Bengaluru's club floors were ready to dance in Kannada. It sounds obvious now. It was not obvious then.

From an experiment to a named property

The idea held. By September 2023, the billing on Insider.in had evolved into NKM & Kalaluha present Kannada DJ Night. That change in wording matters more than it looks. The experiment had become a property with a name, a partner structure and a repeatable identity. Kalaluha had been founded in 2023 by Dr. Chethana R S with her sibling and business partner Vishal R S, and the Kannada DJ format was one of the first things the new company could call its own. NKM brought the community, the humour and the reach of Karnataka's meme culture. The production side brought the discipline that turns a party into a property: consistent staging, consistent branding, a night people could trust before they saw the lineup.

What the format proved

The bet underneath the Kannada DJ Night was cultural, not commercial. Kannada music had every right to own a club night in its own capital city, played loud, mixed live, without apology. The company name itself carries the same conviction: Kala means art, Luha means blazing fire, and the mission has always been to bring India's art forms, music and stories onto bigger stages. A DJ console in Koramangala is a smaller stage than an arena, but the principle is identical.

Where it stands today

That single February night has since grown into eight premium Kannada DJ properties. The current club property runs at Fandom at Gilly's Redefined, Koramangala, and the 7 December edition carried a lineup of DJ Lethal A, DJ Nuthan and DJ Harry D Cruzz. The same instinct that powered the first NKM party now runs through much bigger rooms: Kannada rap at The Leela Palace, Kannada collabs on a world tour stage, celebrity cricket in Kannada film colours. The through-line is the belief that local culture deserves premium production, and it was tested first on a dance floor with a meme page as co-conspirator.

Origin stories tend to get polished in the retelling, so we try to keep this one honest. Nobody involved in February 2022 was thinking about close to thirty productions or lakhs of tickets. They were thinking about whether the room would fill and whether the crowd would sing. It did, and they did, and everything since has been an attempt to keep answering that same question at larger scale. You can trace the lineage on our Kannada DJ Night page, see where the same energy went next with Hip Hop Kannadigaru at The Leela Palace, and read about the founder who backed the idea on Dr. Chethana R S's page. Some companies begin with a business plan. Ours began with a party.
