Hiphop Tamizha at NICE Grounds: The Return of the Dragon in Bengaluru

Some tours visit a city. This one adopted it. On 23 August, Hiphop Tamizha, the duo of Adhi and Jeeva, brought their world tour Return of the Dragon Home Edition to NICE Grounds, Bengaluru, and did something they had never done anywhere before: multilingual Kannada collaborations, live, for the first time ever. Kalaluha produced the night, and it belongs on any shortlist of Bengaluru's great hip-hop evenings.

Who walked on that stage

Hiphop Tamizha's place in Indian music history is secure. In 2012 they released India's first Tamil hip-hop album, an achievement recognised by the India Book of Records, and Adhi has since built a parallel career as a film composer and actor with Meesaya Murukku and Natpe Thunai. A decade on from that first album, Return of the Dragon is the sound of pioneers touring the world they helped create. Bringing that tour to Bengaluru meant bringing Tamil hip-hop royalty to a city with its own fierce, growing hip-hop identity, and the show was built to honour both.

The Kannada first

The headline of the night, beyond the headliners, was the first-time-ever multilingual Kannada collaborations. For a Tamil hip-hop institution to weave Kannada into its Bengaluru show was more than a courtesy to the host city. It was a statement about what Indian hip-hop is becoming: a conversation between languages rather than a set of parallel scenes. The ground understood exactly what it was witnessing. Kalaluha has invested in Kannada hip-hop and Kannada club culture since our earliest days, from our Kannada DJ properties to Hip Hop Kannadigaru at The Leela Palace, so a night where Kannada entered a major touring show's setlist for the first time felt personal to us.

The full bill

A hip-hop night lives on its undercard as much as its headliner, and this one was stacked with Bengaluru-relevant talent. Before Adhi and Jeeva took the stage, the ground was warmed by:

• Lazy B, DJ and rapper
• Maahin, holding the night together as anchor

By the time the headliners appeared, NICE Grounds was not waiting for a show. It was already inside one. That is what a properly designed bill does: it builds the night in stages so the peak lands on a crowd already moving.

Why it mattered

NICE Grounds is one of Bengaluru's major open-air venues, and filling it with a hip-hop audience says something about where live music in this city is heading. For Kalaluha, founded in 2023 with a mission to bring India's music onto bigger stages, this show checked every box: a landmark touring act, a genuine cultural first in the Kannada collaborations, homegrown talent on the bill, and open-air scale handled with full production discipline. India's live audience is not one audience, and we intend to build stages for all of it.
