Appu Cup Season 02 Recap: Cricket in Memory of Puneeth Rajkumar

Puneeth Rajkumar's name still does something to a Kannada crowd. Say it in a stadium and the air changes. Appu Cup exists because of that: a Kannada celebrity cricket property played in memory of Appu himself, where the sport is the format but remembrance is the point. Season 02 carried that idea forward, and Kalaluha's connection to it runs deeper than production credits: the Gandhadha Gudi Warriors, one of the competing teams, is owned by our founder Dr. Chethana R S, with actor Bhuvan Gowda leading the side as captain.
What Appu Cup is
Celebrity cricket occupies a unique space in Indian entertainment. It is sport enough to be genuinely competitive and star-driven enough to be a show, and when the stars are Kannada film and television faces playing under a beloved name, the crowd relationship becomes something no scripted event can manufacture. Appu Cup channels all of that toward a single purpose: keeping Puneeth Rajkumar's memory alive in the most public, most joyful way possible. A tournament in his name means his fans do not just remember him privately; they gather, wear team colours, and cheer, which is exactly how Appu made people feel when he was on screen.
The Warriors and the ownership story
The Gandhadha Gudi Warriors carry a name that needs no explanation for a Kannada audience, and the team's story is also a Kalaluha story. Dr. Chethana R S owns the franchise, one of three Kannada celebrity sports reality properties she holds, and Bhuvan Gowda's captaincy gives the side a recognisable face at the toss and in the field. Team ownership is not a side interest for us. It reflects a deliberate belief that sits inside Kalaluha's services: that sports and entertainment is a production discipline of its own, spanning league and property creation, team and celebrity management, sponsorship and broadcast packaging, and match-day production. Owning a team means living every one of those layers from the inside.
Why a production company plays cricket
It is worth pausing on why an event production house founded in 2023, known for concerts with artists like Shreya Ghoshal and Kailash Kher, invests in celebrity cricket at all. The answer is that a match day is a show. It has an audience to move, a programme to pace, talent to manage, sponsors to serve and a broadcast to feed. The skills that stage a sold out concert transfer directly to a stadium, and the property model adds something concerts rarely offer: continuity. A season returns. Teams build followings. Rivalries mature. For a company whose stated ambition is building properties and original IPs rather than one-off nights, Appu Cup Season 02 is proof of the model in action, and its emotional foundation, the memory of Puneeth Rajkumar, gives it a meaning no manufactured league can buy.
The scoreboard that matters
Seasons produce winners and losers, but a memorial tournament keeps a different ledger. Every filled stand, every chant of Appu's name, every child in a team jersey asking a parent who Puneeth Rajkumar was: that is the score that counts, and by that measure Season 02 did its job.
