Appu Cup Season 02: How Kalaluha Turns Cricket Into a Live Show

Appu Cup Season 02: How Kalaluha Turns Cricket Into a Live Show

A cricket match already has drama built into it. What it does not have, by default, is a show. When Kalaluha took on Appu Cup Season 02, the Kannada celebrity cricket property played in memory of Puneeth Rajkumar, the production brief was clear from the first meeting: honour the man the tournament is named for, and give the audience something that feels like an event from the moment they see the ground, not just a game they happen to be watching.

Designing for a ground, not a stage

Most of our productions begin with a stage. A cricket ground flips that logic. The playing field is the performance area, the boundary is the front row, and the audience wraps around the action on every side. So the production design for Appu Cup had to work in the round. Sightlines, signage, team branding and presentation zones all had to read clearly from any seat, which is a very different discipline from building one beautiful picture for a proscenium stage.

The visual identity carried the emotional weight of the property. This is a tournament played in memory of Puneeth Rajkumar, and every frame had to respect that. Our design lead Megharaj S N applies the same rule here that he applies to our concert artwork: if a layout cannot survive being blown up forty feet wide, it does not leave his desk. Team identities, match-day creatives and on-ground branding for sides like the Gandhadha Gudi Warriors, the team owned by our founder Dr. Chethana R S and captained by Bhuvan Gowda, all passed through that same filter.

Sound and light that follow the game

Cricket production sound is not concert sound. There is commentary, there are player introductions, there are music stings when a boundary is hit, and there are long stretches where the game itself must breathe. The system design has to deliver clean speech intelligibility across open air first, and energy second. Cueing is live and reactive: nobody scripts a six, so the show caller and the audio operator work off the game in real time, the way a sports broadcast director does.

Lighting and visuals follow the same principle. Daylight overs need very little help. As the match runs into the evening, the presentation elements, the entrances, the felicitations and the celebrations become the moments where light and screen content earn their place. The skill is restraint: the game is the star, and production exists to frame it.

A property, not a one-off

Appu Cup sits inside our Sports and Entertainment practice, which covers league and property creation, team and celebrity management, sponsorship and broadcast packaging, and match-day production. That last phrase matters. A season is a system: repeatable match-day run sheets, consistent team presentation, and a visual language that stays recognisable from fixture to fixture. Season 02 exists because the property was built to return, and building things that outlive a single night is exactly how our co-founder Vishal R S evaluates every project we take on.

  • League and property creation: format, identity and season structure
  • Team and celebrity management: players, owners and appearances
  • Sponsorship and broadcast packaging: making the property partner-ready
  • Match-day production: sound, presentation, ceremonies and flow

The deeper reason this property matters to us is simple. Kannada audiences turn up for their stars with an intensity few markets can match, and a tournament in Puneeth Rajkumar's memory carries a responsibility beyond entertainment. Getting the production design right is how we honour that.
