Why Kalaluha Owns Its Sports Properties: The Strategy Behind Appu Cup and More

Most event companies rent their calendar. They produce other people's tours and hand the brand equity back at load-out. Kalaluha, the Bengaluru live-event and concert production company founded in 2023, decided early to own part of its slate. Its sports properties are the clearest expression of that choice.
The three properties
- Appu Cup: celebrity cricket played in memory of Puneeth Rajkumar
- Indian Bowling League: the company's owned bowling property
- Television Cricket League: Kannada television celebrities on the cricket field
Each one is a Kalaluha property, not a one-off booking. That distinction drives everything that follows.
Why ownership beats rental
Vishal R S, Co-Founder and Head of Strategy, puts three questions to every project. Can this be sharper? Can this mean more? Can this outlive a single night? A rented show can clear the first two. Only an owned property clears the third.
Ownership changes the economics in specific ways. The brand value compounds with every edition instead of resetting to zero. Sponsorship conversations change from buying a night to joining a property. The audience relationship belongs to the company, so the next edition starts warm, not cold. And the calendar becomes predictable: an annual property is inventory the company controls, not inventory it has to chase.
Why sports, and why these sports
Kalaluha's home market loves its screen stars and its cricket in equal measure, and celebrity cricket joins the two. The Appu Cup carries the added weight of memory: it honours Puneeth Rajkumar, and that gives the property a meaning no rented tour date can match. The Television Cricket League does something structurally clever: it turns the Kannada television world, with its built-in daily audience, into a sporting cast. The Indian Bowling League extends the same owned-property logic into a different game.
Sport also solves a producer's oldest problem: repeatability. A concert depends on an artist's routing and availability. A league belongs to its owner. It can return on schedule, grow, and deepen its sponsor roster season after season, on a calendar the company writes itself.
The strategic picture
These properties sit inside a larger thesis. Vishal plans Kalaluha's original IPs as long-running cultural properties: assets designed to appreciate, not events designed to end. The sports slate proves the model at home in Karnataka while the company builds outward, including Music from the Valley, a ten-city premium live experience rooted in Kashmir featuring santoor maestro Pandit Rahul Sharma.
Since 2023, Kalaluha overall has produced close to thirty shows, sold more than 3.5 lakh tickets and generated over Rs 20 crore in combined ticketing and brand-partnership value. The sports properties are built so that a growing share of that value accrues to brands Kalaluha owns outright, year after year. Rent the stage when it makes sense. Own the story wherever possible. That is the strategy.
