Where Creativity Meets Capital: Vishal R S Reads the Numbers Like a Script

Vishal R S has a signature line at Kalaluha: he reads the numbers like a script, and directs the risk. It is a good description of a rare job. Live entertainment runs on two languages, creative and financial, and most people speak only one. Vishal's role at the Bengaluru production company is to be fluent in both.

Two trainings, one head

Vishal R S is Co-Founder and Head of Strategy at Kalaluha, where he leads strategy, finance and operations. The finance side runs deep. An IIT Roorkee alumnus, professionally active before he turned eighteen, he runs a money-management platform with over Rs 30 crore under management and advises companies as a virtual CFO. The creative side is trained too. He holds a Trinity College London Grade 8 in music theory. He can follow the money and the music in the same meeting, and that is precisely the point.

Numbers have narrative

Read a project budget the way a director reads a script and it stops being a table. It has structure, tension and a resolution that must be earned. Where is the risk concentrated? Which line is the plot twist waiting to happen? What does the ending look like if the second act runs long? A budget read this way tells you what kind of night you are actually about to produce, long before load-in.

Directing the risk is the second half of the line, and it is active work: choosing which risks to take on fully, which to share with partners, and which to refuse. The sold-out Shreya Ghoshal All Hearts Tour night in May 2024, produced with Superhits 93.5 RED FM under RED LIVE, is what shared risk looks like when it works.

Creativity and capital are not rivals

The lazy model says the artist dreams and the accountant says no. Kalaluha runs on the opposite premise: discipline is what makes ambition affordable. Every project answers three questions before it goes ahead. Can this be sharper? Can this mean more? Can this outlive a single night? The first is a craft question. The second is a cultural question. The third is a capital question. A project that clears all three, the way an owned property like the Appu Cup does edition after edition, is one where creativity and capital pull in the same direction.

The results since the company's 2023 founding suggest the method holds: close to thirty productions, more than 3.5 lakh tickets sold, over Rs 20 crore in combined ticketing and brand-partnership value. Alongside Creative Director Vaibhav B Bharadwaj, who decides how a Kalaluha night should look and feel, Vishal's job is to make sure the vision survives contact with the spreadsheet, and that the spreadsheet is ambitious enough to deserve the vision. The numbers are a script. Somebody has to direct them.
