Choosing a Sports & Entertainment Producer: What Kalaluha Would Ask

Plenty of event companies can rent a ground, hire a commentator and call it a tournament. Very few can build a sports property that survives its first season. If you are a brand, an institution or an investor evaluating producers for a celebrity sports format in Bengaluru, the gap between those two capabilities is the entire decision. Having built and run properties ourselves, including Appu Cup Season 02, here are the questions we would ask in your position.

Have they created a property, or only serviced one?

League and property creation is the first deliverable in Kalaluha's Sports & Entertainment service, and it is the one most producers cannot honestly claim. Executing someone else's tournament teaches logistics; creating a property teaches judgement. The Appu Cup, Kannada celebrity cricket played in memory of Puneeth Rajkumar, is a created property with owned teams and a season structure. Ask any producer you are evaluating to show you a format they built from nothing. If every credit on their list was designed by someone else, you will be paying them to learn property design on your money.

Do they have skin in the game?

Here is an unusual test: does anyone at the production company own a team? At Kalaluha, founder Dr. Chethana R S owns the Gandhadha Gudi Warriors, captained by Bhuvan Gowda, and holds three Kannada celebrity sports reality properties in total. Ownership changes incentives. A producer who owns a team inside the format experiences every weakness of the property personally: a badly managed match day, a thin sponsorship package, a celebrity roster handled carelessly. You want a partner whose interests are aligned with the property's long-term health, not just this season's invoice.

Can they handle celebrities and sponsors as well as cricket?

Celebrity sport is three businesses stitched together. Team and celebrity management demands the touch of an entertainment company, because the players are film personalities with schedules, images and expectations. Sponsorship and broadcast packaging demands commercial rigour, because the property's economics live there. Match-day production demands show craft, because an audience in the stands expects pacing, anchoring and spectacle. Kalaluha brings concert discipline to that last piece: close to thirty productions since 2023, more than 3.5 lakh tickets sold, and over Rs 20 crore in combined ticketing and brand-partnership value. Ask your shortlisted producers which of the three businesses they are weakest in. An honest answer tells you what to supervise; a claim of equal strength everywhere tells you to keep looking.

Decide on evidence, not energy

Sports properties attract enthusiastic pitches because the format is glamorous. Resist deciding on enthusiasm. Look for created properties, aligned ownership, demonstrated celebrity handling and match days run to show standards. Then meet the team and judge whether you would trust them at the moment a broadcast cue and a celebrity arrival collide. Study the Appu Cup as one worked example, see the wider services framework it sits inside, and read Dr. Chethana R S's profile for the ownership record behind Kalaluha's answer to these same questions.
