The Numbers Man with a Grade 8 in Music Theory: Vishal R S of Kalaluha

Two qualifications explain most of what Vishal R S does at Kalaluha. The first is expected: he is an IIT Roorkee alumnus who leads strategy, finance and operations at the Bengaluru live-event company, runs a money-management platform with over Rs 30 crore under management and advises companies as a virtual CFO. The second is not: he holds a Trinity College London Grade 8 in music theory.

That is not a casual certificate. It represents years of formal study in how music is actually built, held by the person the industry would file under finance.

Why a numbers man learned notation

The strategy desk of a concert company negotiates with artists, judges set lists, weighs formats and decides which musical bets deserve capital. Every one of those calls is easier when the person making it can read what is on the page. Theory is the grammar of music. Knowing the grammar does not make someone an artist, but it makes them a far better judge of one.

It changes the conversations too. An artist discussing a show with a producer who understands structure and form is having a different conversation from one explaining music to a spreadsheet. Respect in that room is earned in the room's own language.

Where it shows in the slate

Kalaluha's work leans musical, and musically serious. Nandagovindam Signature Edition marks 25 years of the Nandagovindam Bhajans. Sid Sriram performed for Krishna Janmashtami at KTPO in 2025. The Shreya Ghoshal All Hearts Tour, staged with Superhits 93.5 RED FM under RED LIVE in May 2024, sold out.

And the company's first original IP is the most music-literate bet of all: Music from the Valley, a ten-city premium live experience rooted in Kashmir, featuring santoor maestro Pandit Rahul Sharma. Choosing to build a long-running property around a classical instrument is a decision made with ears as well as spreadsheets.

Numbers and notation are one skill

Here is the quiet truth behind the two qualifications: they are the same skill. A score and a budget are both structure written on a page. Both describe something that does not exist yet. Both reward the reader who can hear the finished thing before it is performed.

Inside Kalaluha, Vishal's role is summed up in one line: "He reads the numbers like a script, and directs the risk." Swap script for score and the sentence still holds, which is the whole point of the Grade 8.

Since 2023, the company he co-founded has delivered close to thirty productions and sold more than 3.5 lakh tickets. Plenty of producers can count. Fewer can also hear. The numbers man learned the music side because, in this business, the music is the numbers, and the producer who reads both makes better bets on both.
