College Fest Production at Professional Standard: A Kalaluha Guide

We know a campus can hold a world-class show, because we have produced one. Shreya Ghoshal's All Hearts Tour stop, presented by Superhits 93.5 RED FM and Kalaluha under RED LIVE in Concert, sold out at New Horizon College of Engineering in May 2024. A five-time National Film Award winner, the first Indian singer with a Madame Tussauds statue, performing on a college campus to a full house. The venue was never the limitation. The standard of production is what decides whether a campus night feels like a fest or feels like a concert.
The gap is discipline, not budget
Student organisers often assume professional shows differ from fests mainly in money. In our experience the real gap is discipline: locked timelines, single points of responsibility, and decisions made once instead of relitigated weekly.
A professional production freezes its critical path early. Venue confirmed, then artist confirmed, then the production design built around both. Fests frequently run these in parallel with nothing locked, which means every element is negotiating with every other element until the final week. Pick your sequence and hold it.
Equally important is one owner per function. Professional shows have a production manager, a stage manager, a front-of-house lead, a security lead. A committee where everyone owns everything means nobody owns anything at 11 pm on show night.
Treat the campus as a venue, with a venue's obligations
A campus becomes a venue the moment tickets or passes exist, and it inherits everything that word implies:
- Permissions and clearances, handled formally and early, not assumed because the land belongs to the institution
- Entry management that can handle the real crowd, including guests from outside campus
- Power planned and backed up, not borrowed from whatever buildings are nearby
- Barricading and crowd management sized for excitement, because student crowds at the barricade are as intense as any
- A medical point and clear emergency routes, briefed to every volunteer
Our Large Format Productions service treats safety, permissions and clearances as engineering deliverables, and a campus show deserves nothing less. The presence of an institution's name on the gate raises the stakes rather than lowering them.
Give the artist a professional experience
Touring artists judge a show by its backstage before they judge it by its crowd. Clean, private green rooms. A single knowledgeable liaison instead of a rotating cast of excited volunteers. Soundcheck protected from onlookers. A run of show that is accurate and honoured. These cost organisation, not money, and they are the difference between an artist who delivers a routine set and an artist who gives the campus a night it retells for years.
Sound and lights deserve the same seriousness. Rented gear operated casually produces a casual-sounding show. If the fest's headline moment matters, put experienced operators behind the consoles and rehearse the transitions, not just the performances.
Partner where it multiplies you
The smartest fest committees know what to keep and what to bring in. Student teams are unbeatable at campus energy, volunteer mobilisation and audience buzz. Professional partners carry the load where failure is expensive: staging, power, artist liaison, crowd safety. Media partnerships add reach the committee cannot buy, as RED FM's presenting role did for the All Hearts Tour night.
A campus show done to professional standard changes what a college believes it can host, and it changes what students believe production means.
